Christmas Countdown – Guitarist 4th December: Stevie Ray Vaughan

Another guitarist that just knocked me out the first time I heard him, his tone was a mountain and he’s feeling for doing both great leads and riffs was outstanding. He certainly refreshed the blues genre and his passing was sad loss… Here’s one of my favourite tracks of the great SRV:

Christmas Countdown – Guitarist 3rd December: Angus & Malcolm Young

First time I heard AC/DC was on tape with “There’s a long way to the top (if you wanna rock and roll”. I wasn’t taken by storm but they grew on me and I still love the old albums up to “For those about to rock”, after that they have unfortunately dont made much that I like. But still, the energy of Angus stage antics and the steady rhythm of Malcolm put a mark in musical history that is legendary. This is my salute to them.

Christmas Countdown – Guitarist 2nd December: Dimebag Darell

I remember being blown away when I heard Pantera the first time, they were so technically skilled AND so brutal. And I was heartbroken when I got the news of Dimebags tragic death on stage… what a loss. Well, I could not make a list of guitarists without including Dimebag and here’s one of my favourite Pantera tracks:

Christmas Countdown – Guitarist 1st December: Ace Frehley (KISS)

Yeah, so Ace was my favourite guitarist when I was a kid and I’m not the only only who got inspired to pick up the guitar thanks to him. So, he is not very technical and there are kids on youtube who can play scales perfectly nowadays but to me he is still a guitar hero. I think it was Eddie Kramer who said something like “He might not have many cards on his hand but he sure knows how to play the cards he was dealt”. Agreed! And he’s funny too! See the Tom Snyder show clip where he steals the show from Gene and Paul, priceless!

Video Tip – Dave Grohl The Pretender Lesson

So, this is more a video on how the song came to be than a lesson but still worth watching according to me! The album “Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace” is already a modern classic album and Dave’s ability to arrange great songs is inspiring to say the least. So is the fact that he went from being the drummer of one of largest bands in the 90’s to being the guitarist and lead vocalist in one of the greatest contemporary bands around… if that’s not amazing I don’t know what is!

Big Muff (Green Russian) from Electro Harmonix – Pedal Frenzy!

Time for another episode of Have Guitars Pedal Frenzy – in this video we’ll take a look at Electro Harmonix Green Russian Big Muff! This video is kinda “first impression” for me as I never owned a fuzz pedal before. I’ve had more distortion pedals and over-drives than I care to count but never a fuzz, but I’ve had good GAS for a Big Muff for quite a while… so when I saw the new release of the Green Russian I was so taken by the cool design that decided now is the time. Fuzz time.

EHX Green Russian Big Muff has a very distinct sound that opens a fat flood of fuzzy tones. The new variant is smaller than the original (good for those who uses a pedalboard) and said to have less gain but more bass and also less “fizz”. To that you can add that the pedal has “true bypass”. What’s not to love about that, huh?

Fender American Standard Stratocaster (Shawbucker/Custom 50’s)
